This session, chaired by Jochen Schanze (IOER), Dieter Gerten (PIK), Miriam Prys-Hansen (GIGA), and Katharina Helming (ZALF), explored the concept of ‘systemic sustainability’ as an advanced framework for linking Earth and societal systems. Presentations by Jochen Schanze, Dieter Gerten, Katharina Helming, and Anette Ruml, moderated by Raghid Shehayeb (IOER), addressed planetary boundaries, agricultural and food system transformation, and the role of value chains. The discussion highlighted systemic sustainability as a novel perspective to foster innovations, shape sustainability transformations, and strengthen relevance for policy and practice. The co-chairs invited colleagues to engage in the new Leibniz Lab ‘Systemic Sustainability’.
