RIA 3:Assessment of systemic sustainability for biodiversity, climate, agriculture and food

Aim and approach

The research & innovation area provides cross-scale quantitative and qualitative evidence for systemic sustainability in the area of action and conflict. It analyses the unique spectrum of observational data and analytical findings available at Leibniz institutions on interfaces between biodiversity, climate change, agriculture and food. Findings are used for addressing scientific questions especially on the status and interactions of selected sustainability goals and planetary boundaries.

The analyses are based on an appropriate selection of the knowledge from Leibniz institutions and other sources that is systematically compiled in RIA 2 and will be here combined with further specific modelling. They will mainly be carried out at a global level and, if necessary, at smaller scales.

The following objectives are paramount:

  1. integrative evaluation of sustainability aspects in the area of action and conflict, measured in terms of compliance with relevant sustainability goals;
  2. quantification of the transgression of relevant planetary and regional environmental boundaries;
  3. analysis of the influences of current agricultural practices on biodiversity and climate as well as other environmental boundaries and their repercussions on the achievement of food security;
  4. Identification of regions and areas of action with synergetic development potential.

The results will be developed using the frameworks and integrating methods of RIA 2 and prepared for utilisation in RIA 5. In addition to the achievable scientific findings, priority research gaps will also be identified.
